Yes! We decided to release the PookMail.com source code under the GPL 2.0 Lincese to the Community.

This is our way to give thanks for all of you who all these years have used PookMail, sent to us your comments and suggestions ... and blames :)

If you want to have your own PookMail.com running on your machine, go ahead and download it. We hope you enjoy!

New changes

Since last friday, we were finally able to put the new code in production. We hope this new change (followed with others) will help to keep PookMail running with a decent time response.

We know that a lot of users blamed us. Please accept our apologies but unfortunatelly we can not provide a better support .. we are not a Internet Big Company nor a little startup, notice we have our own jobs in other company.

We did PookMail just for fun and we will continue playing with it as we did for 4 years, but unfortunatelly we don't have 48h per day in our lives :)

During all the day you probably couldn't access to PookMail. Finally we got news from our ISP who just told yo us that the connectivity should be restored after 19.00h GMT+1.

Since last week Crysys and I we were analyzing all the problems reported by you.

This analysis showed that the new server we bought couple of weeks ago just put more problems over the table. In short, the backend scripts cannot support the ammount of traffic sent by the new server.

With the current backend hardware the only solution that we have is to port the current scripts from Ruby to Perl and try also to simplify them. During last weekend i made this job and my first goal was to have them working at least 24 hours without problems.

Today we reach 34 hours working without problems! But before commit the new scripts scripts into our mercurial repository i rather make some cosmetic changes and add some traces.

I would like to let you know that we will keep PookMail under stronger surveillance the next incoming weeks in order to be sure that the service is stable.

Finally, I would like to give thanks to everybody who spent their time just sending their suggestions, comments and errors reports. That was very appreciated by us.

New Server Installed

Thanks for the ads support we were able to buy a new server to PookMail!

At 14.30 (GMT+1) the new server was installed and configured successfully. With this new one all the problems reported by you during the last weeks were finally solved.

Since last Friday we have put AdSense in PookMail in order to help us to mantain the service online.

From 3 years we tried to avoid using Ads to monetize PookMail but unfortunately things haven't gone very well for us.

After dealing with all our traffic and hardware problems, we are proud to announce that finally we have realeased the most user requested features:

Refresh Button: Placed at the left of the Logout link you find a new one called "Refresh", this allows you to refesh your screen in order to know if some email has just arrived, however PookMail will perform this automatically each 2 minutes.
Replay Email: Some of you have show reported that some emails most be replied in order to activate some cool website account. Now you can do it! You will find this new feature at the left of Save link, included in each email.

We hope you will enjoy those new features and help found this tool more useful. Anyway if you have some new feature that you think it could be helpful to others please drop us an email or put it in the Comments section

The main is the typical queue management problem, when we receive a wave of spams from South America your emails take a lot of time to be processed.

At PookMail we have reached 200 concurrent MTAs connections sustained. That is: 200 mail servers talking to us at the same time, today and yesterday.

Service up (again)!

Hi folks, i pleased to announce PookMail service is up and running again.

One of our swap disks has been broken, and we were far far (Tokyo) from PookMail servers in order to replace them.
Since yesterday Crysys, PookMail system administrator, has fixed them and everything seems to be working again.

Our apologies about the service down problems.

By other hand we think the language list in the home page have become so huge. We are developing a new page who will include the available languages and also the translators credits.

Max message size

We have detected users sending messages up to 1 megabyte. We think Pookmail.com is not a repository for images or music (in multiple zipped files).

May be we are wrong and most of you think this service is useful for share music, images and videos with your friends sending one mail and giving the pookmail account to your pals.

At this time, the one mega limit is hard to sustain. We have limited the message size to 256 kb and the maximum mails per account and day to hundred.

New attack = New rules.

Spammers continue forgering "From:" address in massive email sents pointing it to us. At this time we are suffering a new wave. The bounces come all to Pookmail front MTA-server so we decided to start denying certain origin address to avoid extra traffic and fool inserts in our database from bounces of emails that we DONT sent.

At this time we are rejecting 5 SMTP connection per second from postmaster@ or mailer-daemon@ informing with a 550 error that bounces are not admited and for "further and human information contact pookinfo" at our domain.

We can't reject mail from null sender like "mail from: <>@at.any.host" usually containing bounces without violating RFC 821 as stands here.

Service remain unaffected and fully operative

load average: 300 and growing

After a bit deal with config files and parameters we have considerably reduced our traffic and cpu load.

After restoring, last week, the service our main server were at 300 or more of "load average". Currently we have incorporated a new front server filtering bounces of mails created by spammers using pookmail.com as fake origing address with the sole intention of creating a DoS.

At this time the load is at 10% of the our total capacity of processing.

Hi all,

We are pleased to announce that PookMail is now available again after the attack received days ago.

We are working strong to avoid DoS attacks, or detect them sooner ;) New tools, as Snort, and new hardware has beed added to our system in order to support the overload.

This blog will be used in order to let our users know the lastest news from our services.
